Now that we've got that out of the way. Slanted and Enchanted is basically the history of how we got to the indie rock scene we have today. The history draws the dots between the Beets, Hippies, Punk, Alternative, etc. The thread that pulled each of those movements together is a Do it Yourself (DIY) attitude. Here are some of the questions that have gone through my head thus far.
Q1: What makes one person predisposed to loving indie music, and another satisfied with what is presented on the radio?
My Answer: I think anyone who makes music their number one hobby will eventually go indie. It's inevitable. If you make listening to music one of your favorite activities, you're bound to be exposed to music that's not mainstream, and you realize, there's better music out there.
Q2: Would I have been an indie fan had I lived in a pre-internet era?
My Answer: Sadly, I doubt it. I rely heavily on sites like Turntable.fm, Rdio, and Twitter to expose me to different kinds of music. Indie fans of prior generations relied on Zines (independently run magazines). I don't know how many Zines I would have found, or could still find in Northeast Wisconsin.
Q3: If indie listeners love good music, but hate when said good music gets discovered by the masses?
My Answer: There's really no GREAT answer for this question. I think it comes down to pride. Perhaps you're love with that undiscovered band feels like you did when you were a teenager with a crush. You're infatuated, it's new, but then the band gets a hundred thousand fans, and that band-crush doesn't feel so special anymore, does it?
