My History With Books

The theme of the week is to talk about our history with books/reading before this project.

For me, this "project" began about 5 years ago in my last semester at MLC. I wasn't a huge reader by any sense up until that point. I made the decision that I'd be going to grad school soon to get my masters, and soon after that entering the teaching world. I thought I owed it to myself to become a reader and be more well read.

I tried unsuccessfully to start a reading club at MLC, so I decided to make Facebook my book club, and post everything I read on facebook with the hopes that friends would join the conversation. They did to a small degree, but the greater gain came from my new habit of posting everything I read out there on the internet. It served as a motivator of sorts.

Somewhere in the thick of that, I got a call to teach English at WLA. How ironic. Did I mention my emphasis at MLC was Math? Crazy.

Like many of the males I teach, I didn't much enjoy reading from about 7th grade-age 21. I perhaps thought it uncool, or a waste of time compared to the gleaming technologies coming out during my teen years.

I wanted to make this project to try to make reading seem cool. I was hoping to make it hands off so that you could discover a love of reading without too much pressure. I hope it's worked.

This week I read Is Everyone Haning Out Without Me? and Under the Overpass for a grand total of 1hr.

This week: 1hr
Total time: 21hrs
