(Graphic Design) Logo Week - Day 1 (September 9-13)

Today we are going to transition into our first design project, but a few things to take care of first.

1. I shared a folder with you on Google Drive.
2. Open that folder in your drive, and add 2 folders to it.

  • 1 - Experiments
  • 2 - Logo Design
3. Open Illustrator
4. Mr. Strusz will take you through 7 points of good logo design (adapted fromLogoDesignLove)

  • Keep it Simple
  • Make it Relevant
  • Incorporate Tradition
  • Aim for Distinction
  • Commit to Memory
  • Think Small
  • Focus on One Thing
5. With the remaining time, use the random word generator to create a business out of thin air, and create a logo for it focusing specifically on keeping it simple.

6. By 9:05, You need to have written or typed and printed, a paragraph describing a hypothetical business you'd enjoy opening. Along with your paragraph, throw out some ideas of what you'd like to see in your company's logo (objects, colors, etc.) - I found your original ideas lackluster, try again.

7. By 9:10, I will hand out the paragraphs to random people. Once you receive your new company description, research some logos in that sector. Note common themes, but also how you could differentiate your logo. In the last 20 minutes, on a blank sheet of paper, sketch out 3+ potential logo sketches. When finished, show me.

-----------NEW TODAY----------

8. Show the owner of the business for whom you are designing your two designs. Make them pick which one they like better, and have them suggest AT LEAST one thing that they'd like you to improve.

9. Once you finish your designs, do the following....

  1. Go to your design folder on google drive.
  2. Open the logo folder
  3. Create two folders inside
    1. Practice
    2. Business Logos
      1. Upload your business logos in illustrator format to the business logos folder
      2. Create a document in that folder describing the business you had to design for (you can repeat the paragraph they wrote), and then describe why your design is a good fit for the business - include what they asked you to improve. Also mention what tools you used and anything else you'd like to mention about your design process.
    3. With any remaining time between now and Friday, go back and see if you can improve the practice logo you made on Monday. Upload it to the practice folder when fully satisfied.
